Goals

Turning a savings goal into a monthly number

A big goal becomes manageable once it has a date and a monthly number.

The short version

  1. Write the goal, the amount and the date.
  2. Divide the amount by the number of months.
  3. Review the plan every few months.

Write it down

For example: a goal of 1,200 in twelve months. Writing it down makes it concrete.

Do the arithmetic

Divide the amount by the months available. 1,200 over twelve months is 100 a month. If that does not fit the budget, change the amount or the date.

Make it automatic

Some people schedule a transfer on payday so saving happens before spending.

Check in

Every few months, compare progress with the plan and adjust if life has changed.
